Howdy Doc Nolan!
I did an impressive endo that ended with my landing on my right thigh on a not so soft boulder.
X-rays show nothing broken. Have been HI-RICE'n it since it occurred, with a few doses of prescribed pain meds. Swelling was real bad, Doc was surprised nothing was broken given the amount it was swollen. This occurred Saturday. Swelling is down roughly 30%.
How long should I expect it to take for the swelling to subside?
What would you envision my back to riding routine to be? Doc did mention tissue damage relative to the amount of swelling.
Thanks for your time!
Jim
Ps. I suspect it may not be wise to ride the 64 mile Tour de Gruene this weekend? |

JT:
Give yourself at least four weeks to recover. You likely have a hematoma (blood collection) from the injury and it takes about 4 weeks for this to be broken down and resorbed. The muscles likely have a serious contusion which will also take at least 4 weeks to heal.
Look at doing some gentle exercises to help increase the blood flow and speed the healing. Swimming at an easy pace or low load spinning on a stationary bicycle are exercises that may be of benefit. Give yourself a four weeks off the bike on the road or trail and just do stationary workouts 15 minutes at a time 1-2 times a day for the next couple of weeks then increase the time spinning as tolerated. Then get back on the horse that threw you in about 4 weeks.
As far as riding the tour de Gruene, ride on the back of a motorcycle but not a bicycle.

Thanks Doc Nolan. I appreciate having you as a resource. This is certainly the best forum on the interwebs.
Good luck with the move and new practice down in Corpus. Hope you like wind, water, and road riding.
Cheers,
Jim |
