It seems I have developed a Baker's Cyst behind my knee. I "think" this may have been caused by an overused tendon during the E2 Exam - too many miles on my mtb using eggbeaters with too much float - there is a knot on the tendon. I am feeling the swelling and also pain in the knee joint. A PT advised that I try anti inflamatory and ice. Any thoughts? should I see a doc?
Thanks |

Cynthia:
A Baker's cyst is often due to inflammation of the bursa sac that surrounds the tendons. The bursa sac fills with excess amounts of fluid and the cyst is thus formed. They can also arise for tears in the cartilage overlying the knee or a meniscus tear. Recommendations for management are rest, anti-inflammatory medications, compressive dressings (knee supports) they can take up to two years to resolve and stubborn ones may require intervention with drainage, injection of steroids or even surgical removal. If you cyst is getting larger, is painful or is impairing your movement, get an evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon.
