ok, picture this [and dont laugh too hard] about 2-3 miles into the single track section of an adventure race at Camp Eagle, my team is in about 3rd-4th positions and managing the wet, slick, muddy conditions fairly well. ie. minimum of wrecks.
then; BAM, one deralier snaps and another deralier hanger breaks at the same time. we have multi tools, duct tape and zip ties and not much else and realised we had to make the bikes ridable for 10+ miles of single track, plus probably another 30+ miles of riding thru the race.
we fiddled, scraped mud off, cussed and watched all the teams ride by, realising we would be last by the time we got all this sorted out.
soooooo
tech question, how the heck SHOULD we have made into single speeds? we sort of got it eventually, but it was difficult to find a gear combination the chain would stay on, without too much slack [both full suspension bikes] and was ridable. as it was i could only make my bike work in the big chain ring and Chad's bike had a very low gear, which was pretty funny on the dirt roads.
all tips, suggestions, advice will be greatfully taken on board, altho hopefully we wont have such horrible conditions again for some time.
thanks in advance
