Doc:
From time to time I am forced to leave my bike at home and strike out on business trips for a week at a time. If I have been riding hard (15 - 30 miles a day, MTB) and abruptly stop working out, my legs will experience severe cramping to the point I can barely walk. These symptoms do not occur until five or six days have passes since my last ride. It usually takes a couple of days to work past it. What could cause this and what advice do you have with regard to preventing this occurrence?

Thanks, Keith

backroadbandit:

You are experiencing muscle cramps from disuse of your muscles. This can be alleviated by doing daily stretches even when you are not riding. Get a copy of the book "Stretching" by Bob Anderson. It gives you valuable information and instruction in an easy to follow, well ilustrated format.

When you are off the bike traveling, do some simple exercises to keep you leg muscles limber. You can do half squats, bending the knees only half way then rising slowly to a full stand then slowly go back to the half squats. Do reps of 10-20 then rest for 5 min then repeat 2-3 times. You can also do step ups on a stair, or just go climb some stairs for 10-15 minutes a day when you are traveling.

These tricks can help keep those cramps away. Also review some of the other posts on leg cramps for additional tips.
